The German automaker has confirmed the release of its 2021 BMW i8 option. The vehicle has been confirmed and is reaching its final stage of production with the release date already prepared. The model is going to be a successor of the M, the only mid-engine model that BMW has produced. Everything that you need to known about this car is set in this review as the newest specs, features and equipment rats have been released, so read about it more here.
If you remember the Vision Efficient Dynamics concept model that BMW showcased in 2009 at the Frankfurt Auto Show, you will recognize it in the i8. The designers in BMW wanted to make it big and have decided to expand their model and make it a very interesting one with this sort of a model. Along with the style change came the name change as well and the this brand will form now on be known as the BMW i8 and along with the i3 which is also scheduled for release soon, we are expecting a lot of new things coming out from the production line of BMW.
Surprisingly enough, the 2021 BMW i8 is going to carryover the engine that the concept model has started with. We are of course talking about a in-line three-cylinder engine which is going to combine with an electric motor and transfer the power of the car to the front wheels.
Stepping into the hybrid market is always a big thing and it will continue to be a big thing as well as they making the rivals sweat with their latest release. Models such as the Audi R8 V8 coupe or the Mercedes-Benz SLC-Class vehicles certainly will have a lot of things on their hands with the coming 2021 BMW i8 model.
For now there have not been any other trims of the 2021 BMW i8 confirmed and it appears that we are going to get a standalone model. But there are some good things about the future as they are mentioning an M and an M Sport trim level appearing soon but this might be known after the release date of the i8.
2021 BMW i8 Exterior Design
The exterior of the 2021 BMW i8 looks fabulous. The vehicle has managed to use the opportunity of using exterior of the Vision Efficient Dynamics concept and used it to its fullest potential. The changes made were something that people realized immediately and that is using less the synthetic glass and adding more slid structure to the end product. The i8 is thus going to be using an aluminum chassis where the powertrain and the passenger cell is going to be placed. The call is going to be built and comprised of some lightweight carbon fiber-reinforced plastic which is going to be very strong at the same time. The end result is the 2021 i8 weighting less than 3,285 pounds.
The front end will have a new design of the already famous kidney grille design and there are going to be two large air intakes added as well. The gull-wing doors are not going to be used any more as the standard ones are being used. Also the rear end of the car receives an all new quad exhaust system which goes with the nature of the car. The scissor doors have also been transferred from the concept model which is something that the fans have yearned for and are going to receive.
2021 BMW i8 Interior Photos
The interior of the 2021 BMW i8 is going to be extremely comfortable. The inside of the car is roomy enough to add four people and uses its 2+2 seating layout to do so. Interestingly, the part between the passenger’s compartment and the boot is built from two layers of chemically hardened glass which actually enhances the acoustic features of the car. The seats use a very appropriate trim which is a combination of special leather tanned with olive leaf extract. It does not only give the leather on the seats a natural look but it also makes the quality of it more than great.
The center console and the instrument panel have been designed using a special method called the layering principle. And let’s not forget that BMW puts its standard offer of equipment in their BMW cars so a iDrive operating system is something that you can expect seeing but also a sporty bespoke steering wheel which has multifunction buttons on it. You can get your i8 in a standard Neso trim and add Carpo and Halo lies as optional.
The engine setup of the 2021 BMW i8 is an interesting one. The car is going to combine a a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine for the rear wheels and an output of 231 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. Furthermore, there is going to be an electric engine driving the front wheels which makes 131 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. All in all, the combined output of the car is measured at 362 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque and the power is run by a six-speed automatic transmission which is further connected with a gasoline engine while there is a two-stage transmission for the electric engine. The model is also going to provide a couple of drive modes available, namely the D and Sport modes, but there are also going to be the additional “Comfort” and “ECO PRO” modes also given here.

After a long period of testing we are finally going to get treated to the 2021 BMW i8 final product. And as there is always a big difference between the concept model and its respective production version it can in most cases lead to a disappointing transfer. This time we believe it is not going to be so even with the fact that the style has change a bit. But keeping most of the looks form the concept version is a plus side for the car that we love. Add to that the 4.4 seconds acceleration to reach 0-60 mph and very low center of gravity which allows better handling.
The down side is that this model is going to be very expensive. This is a BMW and a great one at that, so the name and a stellar model do not come cheap and the 2021 BMW i8 will not be as well.
2021 BMW i8 Release Date and Price
Expect to see the latest BMW i8 in stores in the early 2021. The vehicle has already been announced but the exact release date is still something that we are waiting on. According to some rumors, the model is certainly going to be available in the first half of 2021, when you will be able to purchase it. As we mentioned the price for this kind of a model is expected to be high so a figure of $135,925 is an expected one.
